Special guests at the International Women’s Day talk

The MCF Foundation organised a talk on International Women’s Day with 3rd year ESO students at Colegio Gamarra in Málaga and featuring special guests Carolina Navarro, Merche Castellanos, Clo García and Eva Alcaide.

With the aim of ensuring young people value the importance of equality, the MCF Foundation invited nationally and internationally renowned sportswomen from Málaga to the remote meeting with 3rd year ESO students from Colegio Gamarra in Málaga. Laura Pérez, journalist at Avance Deportivo newspaper was the mediator of an event where the guests were able to give their opinion and discuss their day-to-day lives.

Málaga-born professional padel player, Carolina Navarro, ranked number one on the World Padel Tour for nine years, said that although there are differences with male padel tennis, steps have been taken towards equality. Both in terms of prize and competition conditions.

The goalkeeper from Rincón Fertilidad Málaga, Merche Castellanos, Copa de la Reina and Spanish Supercup champion, discussed the increased visibility of women’s handball. Now the young players have female role models to look up to, and their successes show that they compete in the same way as the male players. For her part, Clo García, one of the Málaga CF Femenino captains, gave her viewpoint on the differences that exist in football and how barriers are being broken down, such as the sponsorship of major players by top brands.

From a somewhat different and equally enriching perspective, football referee Eva Alcaide criticised the comments she’s received in several matches, stressing the need to reverse such behaviour. Eva said the chauvinistic comments had nothing to do with her refereeing work.

Thanks to this talk organised by the MCF Foundation, all these women conveyed a highly important message to the young students at Colegio Gamarra. That within the world of sport, there gas to be equality and respect for all. Little by little, it will be achieved. For all that has been achieved up to now and for the work that remains to be done… Happy International Women’s Day, Malaguistas!
