Atlético Málaga: 20 years since the feat

On 10th May 1998, Club Atlético Málaga was proclaimed champion of the Championship Phase, with this title paving the way to achieving the treble (Liga, Copa de la Reina and Supercopa).

On 10th May 1998, Atlético Málaga defeated San Vicente by 0-2 in the final of the Liga Nacional Championship Phase. Today it is 20 years since that victory that led to the old Malaguista team writing history: winning the treble; Liga, Copa de la Reina and Supercopa.

This is how it was done

During the 1997/98 season, Atlético Málaga was proclaimed League champions with 30 points, having won every match in the regular stage. First place in the regular league allowed the girls to take part in the championship phase and win the league title, after beating Oroquieta Villaverde in the semi-final by 1-0 on 8th May 1998. They went on to play in the final against San Vicente, and that victory helped them to obtain the league title.

The 10th May 1998 was the beginning of a golden age, marked by winning the Copa de la Reina on 31st June 1998, with victory against Atlético Juval in the quarter-finals, Oroquieta Villaverde in the semi-finals and Lagunak in the final of the competition. The 0-4 result against the side from Navarra meant the girls were champions of the Copa de la Reina.

Finally, on 30th August 1998, the team won the Supercopa to make it to the treble.

An historic team

The team that made history was made up of: Alicia, María José, Isa Guerrero, Auxi Jiménez, Estrella, Reyes, Sonia Amaya, Raquel Peña, Raquel Pérez, Belén Jobega, Ana María, Gloria, Loli, Libi, Reme, Pirri, Pilar, and Vicky. In addition, Nati, Desi, Lourdes and Montse only took part in the Supercopa. The team coach was Paco Muñoz, with the invaluable support of Manuel Hernández Navarrete. Team delegate was Gloria Rueda.
