Atleti Femenino named as MCFF’s Cup rival

Málaga CF will face Atlético de Madrid in the round of 16 of the Copa de la Reina, following the draw today that paired up the 16 Liga Iberdrola teams.

Antonio Contreras’ girls will be heading to Ciudad Deportiva Wanda the weekend of 24-25 November, in a single-match tie, the winner of which will go straight through to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Major rival

This season Atlético de Madrid was the first opponent of the domestic competition. The reigning League champions defeated Málaga at the Federación Malagueña (0-4) to lead the standings with 18 points and a full house of victories (six out of six), with 25 goals scored and four conceded.

History

Málaga CF Femenino, under its current name, debuts in the Copa de la Reina with this new format of the competition. The now extinct Atlético Málaga was proclaimed champion of the tournament in 1998 in Lleida after beating Lagunak in the final (4-0). A year before, in 1997, the girls were named runners-up, losing out to RCD Espanyol in the final (2-1).
