Atlético Malagueño
The reserve team has had a spectacular season. They ended the regular competition at the top of Third Division Group IX, with 90 points, 107 goals scored and 34 conceded out of 38 games. Unbeatable at home, they remained undefeated throughout the entire season, and with only one draw (2-2 against CD Huétor Tájar).
In regard to the 2B play-offs, the Malaguistas remained at the gates to move up to the bronze division of Spanish football. After losing in the first round to Gimnástica Segoviana, Manel Ruano’s Boys went on to defeat Peña Deportiva de Ibiza to then face a final tie against Unión Adarve de Madrid. The Blue and Whites lost in the first leg by 2-0, and won the return leg in Málaga by 4-2. However, the rival goal conceded in the last few seconds, plus the double value of away goals, put paid to the MCF Academy side’s promotion hopes.
Juvenil DH
The team that competes in Group IV of the División de Honor Juvenil enjoyed a superb campaign. Dely Valdés’ boys won their group title in a nail biting finish. The Malaguistas arrived at the definitive final match tied on points with Sevilla FC, but with a higher goal average. Both teams were defeated in their corresponding matches, therefore the rankings didn’t alter and Málaga CF won the competition.
Winning the league competition allowed the Malaguistas to compete in the XXIII Copa de Campeones, and try to repeat their feat of winning last season. The MCF Academy team defeated FC Barcelona in the first round by 4-2, in a match where they had to come from behind to win. They did the same again in the next stage against RC Celta de Vigo. In the end, the Málaga CF Juvenil team lost out in stoppage time of the grand final against Real Madrid (0-1). Despite the harsh defeat, the Blue and Whites wrote another great chapter in their Malaguista history.
