The Juvenil División de Honor boys were proclaimed Champions of Spain on Saturday. Relive the thrilling final with them.
Málaga CF are the current youth Champions of Spain. The boys qualified for the final stage of the tournament as the best second-place team of the seven groups within the División de Honor, becoming the first club to win the title in this way.
Taking part in the XXII edition of the tournament in Vera (Almería) were: Club Atlético de Madrid, Villarreal CF, RCD Espanyol de Barcelona, Real Racing Club de Santander, Athletic Club de Bilbao, UD Las Palmas, Sevilla FC and Málaga CF. The Malaguistas, headed up by Sergio Pellicer, defeated Athletic Club in the quarter-final on penalties; UD Las Palmas in the semi-final, thanks to two fantastic goals from Luis and Ontiveros; and Sevilla FC in the grand final, again on penalties, following an electric extra time.
Sheikh Rakan Al Thani, Málaga CF Board member, says at the end of the match: “I congratulated our players. I’m very happy for them. We haven’t won this tournament since 2002/2003, so I’m delighted for the players and my father”: Club advisers, Francisco Martín AguilarandAntonio Fernández Benítez also attended the final in Almería, representing the entity. “It’s a Cup that we haven’t won for many years. They’re doing things very well,” says Benítez. “It was a final with a great deal of suffering, but the team competed well. We believed in ourselves and I’m so happy for the boys,” says coach, Sergio Pellicer.
