Schuster: “There were moments today where we deserved a draw”

Málaga CF coach, Bernd Schuster, analyses this afternoon’s game in La Rosaleda’s press room.

The German-born coach states: “We had some very good moments during play, and after all our hard work I think we deserved a draw.  However when you’re up against teams like this, of a much higher level than us, they don’t need to play an amazing game of football to win.  Looking at the rival, Gabi and Raúl García weren’t in action today, then they made some changes, bringing on Adrián etc, which was a big advantage for us.  We maintained control over them for quite some time, and although we didn’t create many goal opportunities, I think we were capable of equalising.  This result is nothing out of the ordinary for me at all.”

With regards to the player formation at La Rosaleda today, with three central defenders, the coach is pleased with his decision: “I think playing with three central defenders today was a success and our approach worked well.  We saw how Atlético de Madrid found it difficult.”

Despite not securing a draw following the change in tactics by Málaga CF, Schuster comments: “We brought on Duda, Roque and Pedro Morales with the aim of tightening up our presence on the pitch, but unfortunately we were unable to equalise.  However we can’t forget that Atlético de Madrid has the best defence in Spain.  We made some changes to our formation in the second half, but we didn’t achieve the desired result,” affirms Schuster.
