Remembering Peiró

MCFTV gathers together a large number of protagonists with two things in common. The now eternal figure of the legendary Joaquín Peiró and Málaga CF. Unmissable.

In chronological order, the following people feature in the video:

Sebastián Fernández Reyes ‘Basti’. A key figure for Peiró to remain in his role during the 98/99 campaign with his brace against Logroñés, leading to a decisive victory with the Madrid-born coach in question after a losing streak. From then on, Málaga shot towards the First Division.

Francisco Martín Aguilar. The current Protocol and Institutional Relations Adviser was a Malaguista director when Fernando Puche and Serafín Roldán were presidents and Peiró was in the dugout, forging a great friendship with the Galgo del Metropolitano.

Rufete. Since his arrival, in the silver division, he was an indisputable player for Peiró on the right of midfield. Together with Agostinho, they were two knives on the wings delivering the balls to Edgar and Catanha.

Iznata. There was always a rumour that Peiró didn’t look to the youth ranks very often, but the truth is that for Raúl it was key when he made his First Division debut, and he was also part of the starting line-up in Vila-real in the first leg of the Intertoto Cup final.

Valcarce. Vicente flew on the left of Málaga’s defence during Peiró’s time, which was not easy at first due to the versatility of Roteta. His goal in the win at Camp Nou, with Málaga new to the elite at the bottom of the table on the visit to Barcelona (99/00), was unforgettable.

Juan Carlos Pérez Frías. His particular promotion to head of Medical Services at the Club coincided with Peiró’s arrival to the Blue and White dugout. They always had a special connection due to their characters: they were both calm, affable and endearing.

Mikel Roteta. A symbol that, despite arguing initially, became an indisputable player for the coach. It could almost be said that it was ‘Roteta and another 10 men’. His pinnacle, lifting the Intertoto Cup at La Rosaleda as captain of Peiró’s ship.

Juan Carlos Añón. Second coach, but above all friend and confidant. Joaquín’s alter ego, his right-hand man, and the good or bad cop with the players as the Madrid-born manager saw fit.

Sandro. Nobody understood Sandrito’s fantasy football better than Peiró. He utilised him in the second halves of matches, so as the sublime technical quality of the player from Tenerife could settle an even game or maintain a favourable result.

José Luis Gilabert. Peiró’s physical trainer who, together with Añón, was a man of absolute confidence to take the team where he wanted them to go not just from a physical aspect, but also from a human aspect as a group.

Juan Carlos Salcedo. A great part of his first years as equipment manager, together with the inseparable Miguel Zambrana, was when Peiró was coach. Similar in sense of humour, almost always sarcastic and cheeky.

Marcelino Torrontegui. The veteran masseur from Asturias joined the Club on the return to the First Division, two decades ago, and his connection with Peiró was instant. In common these two had charisma and a huge number of friends in the world of football.
