Kilometre 36: The taste of victory

The team has returned to winning ways. Málaga defeated Granada yesterday at Martiricos to score three points and some much-needed breathing space ahead of the six remaining games in LaLiga SmartBank 19/20.

When you win, especially in such a solvent way, nearly everything stands out. Collectively and individually. Here are the highlights from #MálagaGirona:

Cifuentes and Juankar

The two Malaguista fullbacks were a continual nuisance for the rival defence, thanks to their constant movement upfront on both wings. The player from Granada was highly motivated against his former team, crowning his match with the opening goal. The left-back from Boadilla meanwhile was indisputable on the left, with fantastic speed and form.

12+1 for Sadiku

We don’t know if the Albanian is superstitious, but what we do know is he’s married to the goal. The 2-0 featured his signature clear and accurate header into goal, taking his tally to 13 in the competition. Although he’ll be out of action at Vallecas due to suspension, his objective is clear: overtake Rondón and Sandro, who both netted 14 league goals to be crowned the Malaguista ‘pichichis’ of the last decade.

Tete is a cannon

The two assists to the Blue and White goals against Girona had the stamp of the winger. Power, speed, crosses…Tete is a dagger on the wing, creating spaces and tipping the balance of the game, especially in a wide-open area as with the first goal. Fresh, after having not played in Lugo, he again showed his signing was a great success.

‘Zamora’ Munir

The Melilla-born goalkeeper was impeccable in goal yesterday, topping Marca’s prestigious ranking with a figure of 0.81 goals conceded per game, just 27 in 33 matches. He’s closely followed by Cifuentes (Cádiz) and Mariño (Sporting). And Málaga CF is the team to have conceded the fewest goals in the category, 31, one less than Sporting de Gijón. Solid defence.

The ‘first’ and most needed

Following the resumption of the competition under the ‘new normal’. MCF lost to Huesca at home and then achieved three consecutive draws. The win against Girona, the ninth of the season, was almost obligatory taking into account the results of the rivals fighting to stay away from the drop zone. With +3 above the position marking the relegation zone, Pellicer’s men have a breather to gain momentum for what will be a heart-stopping finish to the competition.
