José González: “We’re on a tough journey, but we will not fall”

The Málaga CF coach held a press conference following #MálagaGirona: “There are still many games left and there’s a big gap, but I believe in my players. They are showing me attitude”.

#MálagaGirona analysis

“We wanted victory. Whilst we had confidence and generated opportunities, the team was fresh and willing to take risks. When they tightened up and we suffered more losses, we showed ourselves to be tremendously hesitant and fearful. The players were not shown individually. It’s something that should serve to analyse well for the next match. I prefer to focus on the positives, which are what will help us to grow. We played a very good first half, in which we overcame a very good team, who know what they’re playing, but I cannot be happy. When we were down to 10 men, it seemed more than 11 players, which is curious. We disappeared. Even in the divided balls and goal kicks. Generally speaking, we kept a clean sheet, which helps you to grow, there were positive feelings a lot of the time, negative feelings at other times, but we need to focus on the next match and grow”.

Tough road

“We wanted to win the three points, we needed them. If we were in the middle of the season, in a comfortable position, I’d say it was an ugly match, very disputed and that we should validate the point, but that isn’t the case. We are in circumstances of imperative need, we have to know how to take it and live with this concern. I said on the first day in the presentation that we’d either go the easy way or the hard way. I think we could have won in Ipurua, yet we didn’t. We’re on a tough journey, but we will not fall. I was very clear that I would have a very difficult task, and that if we didn’t have a simple route, we’d have a complicated one. I will not stop conveying enthusiasm, particularly at this time”.

Fatigue

“As for fatigue, I have that question. When we had 10 men, we arrived at the opposing goal, we had spark and aggressiveness. I don’t think it was a case of physical exhaustion. It was more mental exhaustion, I want to understand. If you’re tired, when you have 10 men you don’t arrive at the opposing goal area more, yet there were times when we reached the area more at the end than in the entire second half”.

First and second halves

“In the first half we were fresh and daring, everyone wanted it and there was dynamism. However, in the second half, we lost possession easily, they won all the divided balls and throw-ins. In a thousand situations of the game you have to dominate something, and they totally imposed themselves. I have to remain with the good, if not I’m a bad captain. There are still many games left and there’s a big gap, but I believe in my players. They are showing me attitude”.

Clarity in the face of goal

“We needed to score first and crush the game. Today we had many options. We need to have more clarity in certain concepts. We played well up to three quarters of the pitch, but there we lacked something”.
