Funes: “Malaguismo can feel proud of what happened here today”

The Málaga coach spoke after matchday 39 following the victory over Real Sporting. “We’ve been through difficult moments, and that unity from the fans gave us the chance to take all three points at home,” he said.

The unity of Malaguismo

“The assessment is very simple. The Málaga supporters decided what they wanted to happen. Everyone, the press, the fans… It’s beautiful how, when adversity comes, we all come together and push through. We’ve been through difficult moments, and that unity from the fans gave us the chance to take all three points at home. There are few things more beautiful than so many people fighting for something. Today, that was clear to see.”

A very complex match

“We went through many different situations during the game. We started badly, conceding the goal. Credit also to the opponent, and we didn’t use the right mechanisms to break through. Even with a numerical advantage, we went through our worst spell. In those situations, you need much more calm. At half-time, we had several options to adjust. We told them to stay calm, switching to a back three, accepting the risk inside, with only Izan and Ramón in midfield, but we had to take that risk. When we equalised, we needed to be strong in the middle and find options in the final third. Credit to Sporting, especially Rubén Yáñez for the great match he played. I think we needed 22 or 24 shots to score.”

La Rosaleda returns to winning ways

“It was spectacular. It’s worth it to enjoy the journey with this level of intensity. With this desire, all together. Malaguismo can feel proud of what happened here today. What I take away most is all the support from the people.”

Now focused on Ceuta

“There’s a reality, and that is that we still need to win one more, and that’s Ceuta. That has been our identity so far. If we think it’s going to be easy (against Ceuta)… it won’t be. They are a team that has been fighting near the top of the competition. We have to stay focused, it won’t be easy. The step forward was winning in Eibar, and now it’s about winning in Ceuta. It’s going to be the most important match of the year, not the one after, but that one. We need to focus on training well, it’s a very important game for us.”
