ATMalagueño| An unprecedented and historic ascent

Málaga CF’s reserve team achieved its first sporting promotion to Second Division B yesterday in Yecla. An historic day for the second team within the Blue and Whites’ entity.

A special day on a special date. On such a day 25 years ago, Atlético Malagueño (first team) were proclaimed league champions of Third Division Group IX, after defeating Mármol Macael (1-0). The team subsequently moved up to Second B on 27th June 1993 in an epic game against Cristian Lay in Jerez de los Caballeros (Badajoz).

Dely Valdés’ boys rewrote the history of the reserve team in the MCF stage, as the previous ascent to the bronze division took place on 2nd August 2002. In this case it was due to the administrative descent of Granada CF, leaving a place in Group IV of Second B for the then Málaga B.

The ‘B’ team of the current Academy director, Antonio Tapia, didn’t even wait a year for another promotion. This time to the Second Division. On 29th June 2003, at La Rosaleda, they won 3-0 against José Luis Mendilibar’s Lanzarote in the promotion playoffs to the silver division.

You need to go back to 1996 to find the first ascent, to Third Division, of the reserve team during the MCF era. It was on 9th June following a draw (1-1) with Iliturgi, in the 5th match of the promotion playoffs to Third Division.

The draw in Yecla over the weekend led to the boys’ promotion in their own right, within one of Atlético Malagueño’s best moments as Malaguista reserve team.

After eleven years, we return to the bronze division. You’ve made history!
