20 years ago, and against Albacete…

Back on 30th May 1999, La Rosaleda was a hotbed of Malaguistas celebrating Málaga CF’s penultimate promotion to the First Division against this Sunday’s LaLiga 1|2|3 rival, Albacete Balompié.

One of the most sacred dates for a Malaguista is, without doubt, 30th May 1999. Málaga CF, newly promoted to the silver division with Fernando Puche as president, the legendary Joaquín Peiró in the dugout and a superb team, united results and great football in the 98/99 season.

The outcome, finishing in pole position “a la primavera”, as the ‘Galgo del Metropolitano’ used to say, and mathematically securing promotion numerous matches in advance. Málaga CF was the best that season and made a very well-deserved return to the elite of Spanish football.

The loyal, suffering Blue and White fans enjoyed reaching a milestone like never before, leaving some unforgettable images such as the team bus swallowed up by the crowd as the people of Málaga filled the streets.

We remember the stats and facts of Málaga-Albacete, a match that will forever remain in our hearts.
