Willy: “We have to end the year winning at La Rosaleda”

Málaga Club de Fútbol goalkeeper, Willy Caballero, went before the media in the Cuidad de Málaga Athletics Stadium press room to analyse the team’s current situation.

Firstly, Willy reviewed the Cup game.  “What happened the other day was the consequence of many things.  It happened to Milan in a Champions League final.  We had it tied up and then they made it up uphill struggle for us.  How it all turned out does hurt, but we have to move on and try and make it better at the next home game.”

Despite not obtaining the desired results, the Argentinean keeper draw positives conclusions, but at the same time is self-critical.  “The results aren’t helping us follow a line.  We have good first haves but then we’re not being consistent. We’re conceding lots of goals and I’m the main one to blame for that. In terms of morale, the team’s not in a good place for having let in those three goals.  The problem could be down to lots of issues - but it’s not a physical thing, perhaps it’s that we’re not defending as well as we should, and we certainly can’t put anything down to the younger guys.”

Willy Caballero is aiming to achieve three important points in next Saturday’s match against Getafe CF.  “We have to end the year winning at home. Against Getafe there are more than just three points at stake.  Considering how badly we’re doing we should be in the drop zone and we have to win as the home side to never allow ourselves to be in those positions.  We owe it to them; if the fans aren’t happy, the problem’s us.”

Regarding rumours of his departure, Willy says he’s only thinking in the next game and is still optimistic of being able to play for his national side in the World Cup, following a favourable fan-based questionnaire.  “If people are thinking about me then that makes me proud and gives me another reason everyone to show what I’m made of.  For them, I’ll pull out all the stops to try and change the mind of the manager, even though he will have already made up his mind.”
