The ‘Malaguista’ defender adds: “Conceding a goal so early on made the match very difficult from the start, and when they scored a second time, Athletic had almost secured victory.”
Weligton is now putting this defeat behind him and concentrating on next Monday’s match: “We’re only relying on ourselves and our results, and have complete focus on Villarreal now. We’re not going to change, we’ve got a very limited squad with a lot of injuries at the moment.”
Sergi Darder: “The first two goals shaped the match”
The Mallorcan-born midfielder agrees with Weligton regarding the importance of Athletic’s first two goals: “They shaped the match.”
Darder has faith in his team: “We really did try and impose our style of play, although it wasn’t our best match tonight. We were the same team as always but this is a very tough ground.”
The Artá-born player is disappointed he didn’t get a goal when the ‘Malaguistas’ were 2-0 down: “I just wasn’t ready for the ball, it was unlucky as we could have got back in the game.”
Sergi is not resting on his laurels with regards to staying in the First Division: “We’re not panicking but we need to win the last five matches. It’s crucial that we maintain a strong ambition, as tonight’s defeat has been a bit of a wake-up call.”
