Víctor: “We’re angry; we need to improve”

The Malaguista coach analyses the final match of 2019 at La Rosaleda: “The fans’ anger is ours”.

Anger

“We’re angry. We talked about it at half-time. We played a very good first half, we should have increased our advantage to be more than a goal ahead. In the second half, Lugo were far more direct, and were obviously going for the match. They have players who outperformed us, but we resolved the situation well. They pushed us back a little, but on the counterattack, we had some very clear opportunities to score again, but we didn’t manage to. Then came the break. Play was disrupted, as were the transitions in the final minutes when we could have got a second goal, and an isolated action with a free kick on the edge of the area coupled the accuracy of the goal-scorer. We have to work hard to make as few mistakes as possible, as victories are proving to be a real struggle for us, and it makes us angry. It’s that feeling of anger when you could have scored a second or third goal. In the end, we let two points escape, but we won’t miss them at the end of the season, of that we’re very clear”.

Improve and work hard

“We have to improve, that is certainly evident. We can see all the work we’ve done, everything we tried to do; we utilised all our players, we tried different systems of play as the situations have required each week. As such, in that regard, it’s clear that we need to keep insisting in order to keep improving via hard work. The market opens a window in which we need to improve. Our rivals are going to be reinforced”.

The fans played a key role as always

“We must thank the fans. They gave us a great welcome and supported the team tremendously well throughout the match. The fans’ anger is ours, we share it. We respect them so much and they are of vital importance to the performance of the team. The league requires us to continue to compete, we know the fans understand that and it’s important to earn points in every game. Therefore, this has been their response. Today they took the blow as did we, it’s very cruel that two points escaped from us in the way they did. That anger bothers us as it will remain for a few days, but our final place in the standings won’t be impacted by two points”.
