Toni Mengual returns to Málaga CF

The first team’s coaching team will have a new goalkeeper coach for next season. This will be Toni Mengual’s third time at the Club. “For me this is like coming home,” he said.

Antonio José López Mengual (Madrid, 1991) began his relationship with Málaga CF with the Blue and Whites’ second team, Club Atlético Malagueño, between 2013 and 2015. “I came to the reserve team, headed up by Salva Ballesta, and he allowed me to have that first contact with Málaga. I remember seeing capacity crowds at the Federación ground and you could feel the support Málaga had,” he told MCFTV.

Mengual continued his professional journey alongside former Malaguista Juan Ramón Muñiz, accompanying him at AD Alcorcón (2015-16) and Levante UD, achieving a brilliant promotion with the Valencian outfit (2016-17) to LaLiga Santander.

Talking about the 18/19 season, Mengual’s second time with MCF, he stated: “I came back with Juan Ramón Lopez Muñiz. Someone who has gone out of his way for this club. I always remember a phrase that he said, that the club and the shield are above everything.”

After two brief spells at Deportivo Alavés (2020) and Getafe CF (2021), linked to former Blue and Whites Muñiz and Míchel, respectively, Toni is now fully immersed in his third stage with the Martiricos entity. “Now with Pablo Guede, these initial days of contact, he conveys his enthusiasm to you. It’s a privilege to be able to work with a coach who has such a Malaguista feeling,” he stressed.

Toni Mengual kicked off goalkeeper training yesterday at El Viso with Manolo Reina, the first signing of the 22/23 season, homegrown keeper Carlos López and Arturo Ramírez, Malagueño’s signing from Torre del Mar.

Youth, experience, professionalism, discipline and a feeling of belonging. Toni, it is a pleasure to have you with us again. Welcome to your Malaguista Family.
