The legend of Viberti was born against Espanyol

The first match of one of CD Málaga’s most symbolic players, Sebastián Viberti, ended in an unforgettable victory at La Rosaleda against RCD Espanyol.

On 30th November 1969, the legendary Sebastián Humberto Viberti Irazoki debuted with Club Deportivo Málaga. The rival, at Martiricos, was RCD Espanyol. The match, corresponding to Second Division matchday 13, ended with an unbeatable debut for the Argentine midfielder.

CD Málaga defeated the Catalonian rival with Wanderley netting four goals, and Viberti closing the scoring run with the definitive 5-0. That would be the biggest Malaguista win that 1969/70 season for the team coached by Hungarian-born Kalmar, who selected the following 11 on that day: Goicoechea; Montero, Arias, Martínez, Monreal, Conejo, Benítez, Viberti, Wanderley, Cabral (Aragón 70') and Pons (Moli 72').

From that moment, the team continued to move upwards, with Viberti playing 22 matches (8 goals) during that league season, and CD Málaga not losing once – 10 victories and 12 draws. Furthermore, Viberti scored two goals against Bilbao Athletic, which led to First Division promotion for CD Málaga on the final matchday.
