Míchel: “I have the obligation and hope to believe”

Málaga CF coach, Míchel González, held a press conference following #MálagaEspanyol: “If we can turn the situation regarding the squad around, the team will improve”.

Situation

“It’s an almost catastrophic situation. In recent games we’ve tried to re-engage, and due to certain circumstances, haven’t been able to. It’s also the fact that, although it sounds strange, I can’t ask more from my players. They deliver and do all they can, within our conditions, including the coach, but the results are poor. This is evident. Giving words of hope and encouragement at this time isn’t easy. The players are a little tense. During the match, the first thing that happened to us was to concede a goal, without anything happening in play. The first half was good on our part. We had a few chances that we didn’t manage to materialise. In the latter part of the second half we played much more with the heart as a result of this tension which, logically, we’ve created ourselves with the bad results”.

Believe

“I believe because I see the players give their all. Although the results are poor, I see the guys work hard and train hard every day. I don’t see anyone that has jumped ship. I have the obligation and hope to believe that things will change”.

Morale

“The lads are young and, at times, inexperienced. They are aware that the situation is a tough blow for us. Which is why I can’t ask anything more from them. They do a lot, such a lot. I know people are angry with us, rightly so, but my players are hurting. They suffer because the results aren’t there, but the hard work is. They give everything they have yet the results are still bad. It’s inevitable that the players are crying, they’re upset, the coach is in question and the fans are angry”.

Improve resources

“I think we must improve our resources. I don’t know from the bench whether many others will consider it. An example is Iturra, a player that many talked about, and was one of the best on the team. We’re tightening our belt a lot in regard to the financial situation, but Iturra arrives and contributes to the team. It means that if we can turn the situation regarding the squad around, with this coach or another, the team will improve”.
