Sergio Sánchez: “We’ll concentrate more on the attack against Sevilla”

The ‘Malaguista’ defender held a press conference this morning at the Ciudad de Málaga stadium following training. Sánchez is pleased with the team’s top-level defence: “Our defence is tight, I feel more comfortable in this position on the pitch.”

The Mataró-born player is looking forward to his sixth derby between Sevilla and Málaga, having played for both sides: “There’s always more pressure in derby matches as both teams know how much it means to the fans, and we always want to give them a good game.  However Sunday’s match is important for us, against a difficult rival at a tough ground, as we need to earn our first points of the season.  A victory this weekend would be a real morale boost for the team.”

Following the solid defensive display shown in last Sunday’s game against FC Barcelona at La Rosaleda, Sánchez comments: “We need to step up our attack, as we want to be the team in control of the ball throughout each match.  It’s all about finding the right balance, so we’ll focus on increasing our attack this weekend and maintain our tight defence.”

Málaga CF will be concentrating on a more upfront style of play against Sevilla FC: “Our coach’s mentality is always focused on the attack, but we knew that we’d have to make a few changes to our game play to compete against FC Barcelona.  From now on, the coach wants us to step up our attacking display and maintain ball possession as much as possible, so that’s our aim this weekend.”

Sergio Sánchez has been in training along with Málaga’s latest signing, El Hamdaoui: “He’s a well-established player with a lot of experience, and he’s determined to show off his skills, which is important for the team.  El Hamdaoui is very versatile on the pitch, works well on the wing, moves around quickly and I think he could work well alongside Roque as they both bring different things to the game.”
