Pellicer: “We deserved more points”

The Malaguista coach held a press conference following #MálagaRealOviedo. “It’s another point in the pot, but it’s a shame as we were in the lead”, he stated.

Analysis

“Play started out like a boxing match. We got off to a good start, with transitions and playing in the opponent's field, then the goal stemmed from a set piece. We were lacking the last pass and final shot in the finishing zones. In the last five minutes of the first half there were two or three dubious actions due to the rival’s momentum. At the beginning of the second half, before the goal, each team had a shift. When we conceded the goal, the rival was better because we lacked calm in midfield, and on the attack, we weren’t balanced in the finish. It’s very difficult to play against the same rival twice in three days. It’s another point in the pot, but it’s a shame as we were in the lead and we thought we could have scored a second goal. Oviedo, despite being behind us, have potential and a large squad. In regard to the VAR, there are times when we feel wronged, it’s sometimes not fair. Refereeing is tough and the interpretation isn’t going in our favour, but we have to focus on our work. We need to improve as it’s costing us to win at home, and at the start of the second half. I congratulate the group, the lads showed sacrifice and hunger. We tried, the team gave their all”.

Review of the first round

“It’s bittersweet due to the last five matches. We’re ambitious. We are aware of the circumstances we’ve had, our aim was to have 30-32 points at this time. However, the team is competing, but it’s a shame that we’re not being consistent at our home ground, we’re winning more points away from home. We’re going to try to change the dynamic at home to earn more points like we do in away games, to have peace of mind. We deserved more points. Now it’s time to focus on the Cup game and Ponferradina. The analysis is positive, we have to look at how we started, the evolution of the players’ performance and the room for improvement. The team gives everything and we’re going to compete to the max. We want to increase the distance from the teams below and, when the objective is achieved, we’ll fight for all we can. The message is ambitious but very real. We’re not settling, we’ll fight for everything in the conditions we’ve had since the start of the season”.
