Paula: "The opportunity to grow in Málaga is unique”

We chat in depth to the new Málaga CF signing, international player, Paula Fernández.

Málaga Femenino midfielder Paula Fernández has just been called-up by Spain’s U-19 squad for the European Championships in Ireland. However, her footballing career began at the tender age of four. Today we look ‘under the microscope’ at our international player to get to know her better.

- When did you start playing football, and why did you choose this sport?

When I was 4 or 5 I began training with my school team, but I didn’t play matches as I was embarrassed. At 6 years old, I started playing matches with my school friends. From a very young age I watched every televised game and thought I’d like to do the same.

- Let’s talk about Málaga, why did you decide to continue your career here?

It’s a project that adapts to how I would like my sporting career to develop, as well as my growth as a player. The commitment to women’s football in the short and medium-term is decisive, and the opportunity to grow here is unique.

- You’ve played with the under-17s in various European competitions as well as a World Cup, what’s your experience of the national squad? Do you hope to compete with the first team?

Being part of the national squad always allows for growth both from a sporting and personal aspect, which is the most important thing. We’re a great group of friends who enjoy playing football, and we do so at the highest level possible, always giving priority to the team. My experience has been extraordinary. Playing with my country’s first team is the major goal, although I don’t want it to be an obsession.

- Regarding Antonio Contreras, have you worked with him? How would you describe him?

Antonio has an impressive career in women’s football both nationally and internationally. Having been on the bench of Atlético de Madrid and UD Levante, as well as his links with Arsenal, shows his great experience. I’m sure he’s going to help us all improve.

- What are your hopes for the 2017-18 season?

To grow, improve and learn in every aspect; as a player and as a person; and to always help the Club achieve its objectives. I am part of a great, very exciting project.

‘Under the microscope’…

Do you have any nickname your friends call you? They call me Pauli or Pau.

A book… the last one I read was “Míster: ¿Por qué yo no?” by Toni García.

A band or song… I like a bit of everything, I haven’t got a favourite group.

A hobby other than football … Watching television, and spending time with friends and family.

Qualities…. Demanding a lot from myself.

Flaws… on occasion, demanding a lot from myself.
