Míchel: “Being eliminated isn’t positive”

The coach was self-critical after his team was knocked out of the Cup by CD Numancia, and affirms: “It’s time to focus on Levante, which is fundamental for us”.

Analysis of Cup tie

“Undoubtedly the first leg wasn’t good. The score was under control, yet we made mistakes within three minutes and lost the game. I think the first half today was good, even though we went wrong a couple of times at the start, but the team later corrected well, took the lead and generated opportunities. In the second half, I think we went out there with insufficient control of play, allowing the rival to approach. Although the visitors didn’t create too many chances, we are fully aware that we concede in nearly all our games. For the many occasions and situations that we generate, we don’t score. I would have liked to win this tie, as I like this competition”.

Seek solutions

“We are a First Division side and shouldn’t allow ourselves to be eliminated from this tie, especially with everything that’s happened. However, we can’t stop here, we’ve got another crucial match coming up on Friday. Today we had to look for solutions. It wasn’t about forcing the players too much as we have a compromised situation on Friday that we need to win. Being eliminated isn’t positive, because as I said earlier, we would have preferred to win this tie. I’m not going to get angry about it, but concentrate on looking for solutions for Friday”.

Victory to boost morale

“I think the most important thing in a competition is to win. When you are up against a rival and are dominating play, you have to resolve it. I cannot take any positive conclusion in regard to rest, as the next match would have taken place in January. I wanted my team to win to boost their morale”.

Nerves

“We tried everything, including with the substitutions and seeking solutions. We put two strikers in there yet still didn’t make a good shot. We look for solutions, but at times, it backfires. There were two extremely clear opportunities for Borja and Juanpi. In fact, the rival didn’t have so many chances to score throughout the tie, yet netted three goals. We were nervous and tense, but today was a good opportunity for many other players to get on the pitch. At times, results can erase the performance of certain players. I don’t like being eliminated. It’s not a logical situation”.

Occasions

“There were many occasions to have created a more positive situation for ourselves. Apart from the goal, we had five or six further chances, yet weren’t able to score. If we didn’t have these chances, then we could say that’s another question. I think often we’re too hasty, which is why we don’t score”.

Fans

“I cannot ask the fans for anything. I didn’t see a bad reaction from the public after this game. They were insisting and trying to help us get that second and third goal. We cannot ask more from them. They are always with us and will be again on Friday against Levante”.

Friday’s match against Levante UD

“We would have faced the game better with a victory. Regardless of that, we know they are two distinct competitions and cannot stay focused on this one. It’s time to rest and focus on Friday’s match, which is fundamental for us”.
