Malaguistas and the World Cup | Giráldez Carrasco

The Málaga-born referee was the first fifth referee in World Cup final history. He was assistant to Medina Cantalejo in Germany 2006.

Victoriano Giráldez Carrasco is the pitch delegate at La Rosaleda in Málaga CF’s official matches and has also featured in a World Cup. For 23 years he was assistant referee in the First Division for referees including Martín Navarrete, López Nieto, Medina Cantalejo, Ramírez Domínguez and Fernández Borbalán, with whom he retired.

During his extensive career he has been part of numerous international competitions, but the 2006 World Cup in Germany stands out. Together with Sevilla-born referee, Medina Cantalejo he officiated various important games such as an Italy – Australia (Italy won the championship) and a Brazil – France in the quarter-finals.

However, without doubt, his participation in the World Cup final was the icing on the cake. Argentinean, Horacio Elizondo was in charge, with Medina Cantalejo as the fourth referee. Victoriano, for his part, made history by being the first ‘fifth referee’. The two Andalusian referees were protagonists in one of the most remembered actions of the competition, the expulsion of Zinedine Zidane for being aggressive towards Materazzi.
