The match between the Malaguistas and the Seviilistas began with the home side a lot more active, so much so that in the first two minutes Rondón had a great shot following a long pass from Monreal. Shortly after that, Varas had to intervene decisively to stop a Cazorla free kick and three consecutive corners. And in one of those corners came Málaga’s first goal thanks to a shot by the Brazilian defender, Weligton, that proved unstoppable for the Sevilla goalkeeper. 1-0 by minute seven and after the goal, Málaga continued with the their offensive dynamic.
But Sevilla soon showed their quality and Luna, after a low pass from Reyes, managed to get one past Willy Caballero and into the net, securing a one all draw at minute 15.
As with all good derbies, the on-pitch intensity continued with the Malaguistas launching into counter attack mode with Rondón starting a powerful gallop, aided by Seba Fernández who fired the ball to the back of the Sevillista goal, meaning Málaga put 2-1 on the scoreboard.
From that moment on, Sevilla sought to play longer shots to avoid the Malaguista attacks, but the Blue and Whites kept up the pressure and made it difficult for the ‘Hispalenses’ despite them managing to get some approaches around Caballero’s area. Towards the end of the first half the match lost much of its intensity, following its strong kick-off - especially on behalf of the Malaguistas.
The first half draw to a close with various moves from Seba Fernández on the right wing and in attack that were collectively helped by his teammates, and as the referee blew his whistle, it was a one goal advantage for the home side.
The second half began with another great individual performance from Sebastián Fernández, a free kick taken by Cazorla, and a handball by Isco that Javi Varas sorted out with a corner. Similarly, there were another three opportunities for Málaga that could’ve widened the gap on the scoreboard.
After the first few minutes, Sevilla got back some possession, although it was the Blue and Whites who remained the threat, even though Negredo had the clearest chance of scoring here with a high shot that seemed to overcome Caballero but which Demichelis saved just centimetres from the home side’s goal. And from this point on, the intensity of the game lowered with action on the flanks, a pass from Monreal, and various performances from Rondón, the highlights.
As the end of the game approached, Sevilla were winning more metres and getting closer to the home side’s goal. In addition, with just ten minutes to go, Isco was sent off for a double yellow, which allowed the Sevillistas to create more danger, such as a disallowed goal by Coke, a shot from Del Moral that spun-off Caballero’s right goalpost, and a further attempt by Negredo.
For their part, Málaga doubled their efforts in defence to maintain the result, something they achieved with an eventual win against Sevilla Fútbol Club.
With this result, Málaga Club de Fútbol are in seventh place with 28 points, meaning they’re one point from European positions and that they have a one point advantage over their pursuers.
