The match was fast paced from the start, with the local side looking to get ahead on the leader board first with two corners, however there was no initial danger for Málaga.
As time went on, Manuel Pellegrini’s men found the rhythm of their game play, with Joaquín and Duda creating the first goal chances for the Blue and Whites, and causing a threat to the other team.
Reserve player Portillo was very active throughout this match, much like the last, with a powerful attacking display and good interaction with his team mates.
During the first 15 minutes of the match, a shot at goal for the local side resulted in both teams being more competitive and increasing the pace of the game.
A shot by Cordero was the first major threat for the Málaga goalkeeper, however he managed to save the ball without any real danger. A second shot by Xerez minutes later again failed to produce a goal. Málaga were quick to retaliate, and a long shot by Duda didn’t reach the penalty area. Another shot at goal from Joaquín failed to see the Blue and Whites first on the scoreboard.
As the match went on, the Malaguistas continued to create danger for Xerez, with Joaquín missing out on what would have been a fantastic goal. Toulalan was a great support for his team mates with a great attacking display. Rondón never stopped searching for a goal, and his powerful attack led to various chances to score.
The last part of the first half was completely dominated by Málaga, who showed a solid defence, resulting in a 0-0 draw after 45 minutes.
Xerez coach Esteban Vigo changed practically the entire starting 11 for the second half, (everyone except goalkeeper Toni). Amongst them were José Mari and Emaná, who scored the first goal for the local side. José Mari smashed the ball straight past Willy Caballero, with great help from Emaná.
With Málaga a goal down, Seba Fernández and Maresca joined the game, in replace of Duda and Xavi Torres. The Blue and Whites were now a stronger force on the pitch, with the two new players brining a faster pace to the game than the first half.
Portillo, Joaquín and Rondón provided Málaga with a powerful attacking form, whilst Xerez CD took advantage of the counter-attack. The second goal for the locals arrived as a result of play between Maldonado, José Mari and Emaná, with Willy Caballero failing to prevent the shot by Maldonado, bringing the home team in the lead by two goals to nil.
With Málaga two goals down, Pellegrini introduced Sergio Sánchez, Eliseu, Camacho and Buonanotte, to replace Jurado, Monreal, Toulalan and Joaquín respectively. The Argentina-born striker, Diego Buonanotte, had a clear chance to score, however goalkeeper Toni prevented the Blue and Whites from joining them on the scoreboard. Málaga completed their substitutions with the introduction of Juanmi to replace Rondón, with the team desperate to score with just 20 minutes left to play.
The last part of the match was centred around midfield, though Málaga dominated ball possession, with Portillo very active on the pitch, as well as Buonanotte, who had several shots at goal, in front of the penalty area and via corner kicks, but failing to get the Blue and Whites on to the leader board.
The final whistle blew in the Chapín stadium with the visitors unable to score. A two nil victory for the local side has only reinforced Málaga’s desire to work as hard as possible ahead of 2012/13.
