Juande: “We had to take risks to try and turn the match around”

The Málaga CF coach analyses the defeat by Córdoba: “We started off well with the first goal, but they got us on the counter attack and surpassed us”.

Knocked out of the Copa del Rey

“We weren’t expecting to be eliminated from the competition.  We thought that by competing against Córdoba, a team from a lower category, we’d be able to win.  However, both in the first and return legs, Córdoba were the superior side.  That’s what really hurts me”.

Taking risks to qualify

“It wasn’t what we expected.  We’ve already analysed the match against Sevilla.  Taking into account tonight’s game, and the adverse result from the first leg, we had to take many risks in order to turn the scoreboard in our favour.  We started off very well.  We opened the scoring and had the possibility of getting a second goal, thanks to Sandro, that hit the post.  Córdoba got us on the counter attack and scored twice, which made the tie incredibly difficult for us.  I think the attitude and gameplay of the team was good, what we thought it would be, but it was risky and the rival surpassed us on the counter attack”.

Córdoba took advantage of spaces

“It’s certainly true that we’ve conceded many goals, but tonight’s match has nothing to do with the game against Sevilla.  We had no choice this evening but to take risks.  We faced a tough tie, and had no option than to focus on the attacking half.  We performed well on the attack, but defended with few players.  There were lots of spaces and Córdoba made the most of them”.
