Javi Gracia: “We let go of a match we didn’t deserve to lose”

The Navarran-born manager comments following the match against Betis: “When you feel you’ve done enough and don’t deserve to lose, it hurts much more, however we must pick ourselves up and look forward.”

The goal changed the match

“I think in the second half the goal changed the match.  In the first half we deserved to get a goal, as we dominated more of play, but we weren’t capable of converting this constant dominance into goals.  The rival didn’t really generate many goal chances either, they just waited for the moment and made the most of it.  This is also thanks to the quality of their men upfront.”

Unsuccessful

“With that, we wanted to turn the match around, however we were a bit disorganised and unsuccessful and let go of a match we didn’t deserve to lose.”

Look forward

“When you feel you’ve done enough and don’t deserve to lose, logically it hurts much more, but we must pick ourselves up and look forward.  The break now will give us chance to work hard and try to improve things.”

Lacking goals

“It’s clear that we’re lacking goals, but I don’t think it’s fair to place blame on any one player in particular.  It’s something we need to improve on in many ways, with better game play, more arrivals and more goal chances, and of course, more accuracy.  The rival was extremely effective, particularly in the last two matches, although they don’t tend to dominate games, create any more goal chances, or indeed have shots at goal.  This is a reality, the statistics are out there; we’re lacking accuracy and are not generating sufficient goal opportunities.  We need to keep insisting.”
