Funes: “We want to win, but this is part of the learning curve”

The Atlético Malagueño coach held a press conference following the defeat against Huétor Tájar, knocking the lads out of the promotion playoffs to Tercera RFEF.

“We started off well and had two very clear chances in the first 20 minutes. Perhaps we rushed things as time went on, but the lads gave their all throughout, they couldn’t have done any more,” he said.

The season has now come to an end. “It’s tough for us, it’s been a real struggle this year. The boys never stopped believing, never gave up, and I’m proud we got this far,” he added.

Funes considers that “when a draw won’t suffice and the rival takes the lead, things become difficult. It’s a shame as we were performing well.” The Blue and White coach could count on Kevin and Roberto on the team. “There was talk of the possibility at the end of the week, but the first team is the most important. I thank them for their effort,” he affirmed.

“The important thing is salvation. Víctor Olmo is an example, for us this isn’t over, and we have to continue training hard so they’re in the best possible condition. There are very important weeks remaining in the Second Division and I’m convinced that our players are going to play with the first team,” he added.

Lastly, Funes talked about “a difficult season since it was tough for us to start and compete. Little by little the team has been growing. We ended up as the best team away from home, and you can see players in the first team. It’s something to be proud of. We want to win, but this is part of the learning curve,” he concluded, going on to wish Huétor Tájar good luck in the next round.
