Funes: “It’s important that we look at the part we didn’t do well”

The Blue and White coach spoke to the media after #MálagaRealValladolid. “Despite everything, we keep adding points and we want more,” he stated in the Club’s ‘Juan Cortés’ press room.

Match analysis

“If the referee called it, it’s a red card (for Víctor). If that’s the case, there would be more in the match. I don’t want to talk about refereeing decisions. What’s important is that we look at the part we didn’t do well. I really liked the start; we were quite solid. I didn’t like the last 10-15 minutes, we need more composure. In the second half, we reactivated and scored the third. The game felt different after the red card. I can’t feel happy about not winning, but the team’s effort has been spectacular while playing with a man down.”

Feelings

“If we’d finished with 11 players, the match was ours in terms of sensations. With that disadvantage, playing with one less, they scored from two set pieces. In the second one, we see that Juanpe clearly touches the ball and he was shown a card. On the first free kick, Chupe touches it, through three set-piece situations they score three goals and equalise the match. I’m left with the very beautiful moments of football we showed against a great rival.”

Set piece

“They are the second-best team in set-piece situations, and we knew about their strength. They have tall players, and it’s not easy. With 11 against 11, there wouldn’t have been so many set pieces. Playing with one less, you concede ground and any action punishes you much more. Without the ball, we are a different team. The three goals came from a throw-in and two wide free kicks. The work from everyone was spectacular, we have to look at it from a positive perspective. Despite everything, we keep adding points and we want more.”

Changes during the match

“With Montero, we didn’t want to risk being down to 10 men given the lead we had, he was playing a good game. Víctor was also doing well, he dealt with Peter, who was Valladolid’s most dangerous player. Jokin was about to come on when that incident happened. He was playing well and had provided the goal minutes earlier. The set-piece goals we’ve scored this year have come from his boots. The match was going well, we’ve already discussed that incident. Recio was handed a very complex game, he was very exposed. Eleven against 11, he delivered pinpoint passes, and he was outstanding in aerial duels. He had a good match, although it was conditioned by what happened.”
