Cuevas del Becerro to feature in #MálagaRealSporting

Málaga CF continues to build connections between football and Málaga’s local identity. This time, the spotlight shines on Cuevas del Becerro, a hidden gem nestled among hills, which will take centre stage on Saturday at La Rosaleda.

The sensitive vision of artist José Luis Puche is carried away by the murmur of the water to offer us a unique interpretation of the Fuente del Nacimiento, the liquid heart of this town that flows with history.

On Saturday 17th May at 21:00, La Rosaleda will host the emotionally charged clash between Málaga CF and Real Sporting de Gijón on matchday 40 of LALIGA HYPERMOTION. As a symbolic highlight of the game, Cuevas del Becerro will hold a special place both on the match poster and on the Malaguista captain’s armband, bringing the essence of the province onto the pitch.

Nestled deep within the heart of the Guadalteba region, Cuevas del Becerro is more than just a village, it’s a breath of the earth itself. Perched at 724 metres above sea level, it silently watches the passage of time, as light glides over its whitewashed facades like a white poem. Its name comes from a legend about a golden calf hidden in its caves, but what truly shines here is the soul of its people.

Traces of the past emerge among olive groves and hills. On the Cerro del Castillón, the Neolithic era left its mark, and the Romans fired clay ovens that still breathe today. Now, travellers wandering through its streets find pockets of peace in the Church of San Antonio Abad, the mysterious Cueva del Moro, or the Fuente del Nacimiento, where water flows like an ancient song that never fades.

The cuisine of Cuevas del Becerro is a love letter to the countryside: cured sausages slowly prepared over the winter fire, lomo in lard that delights the palate, and sweets that hold the secret of grandmothers in every bite. All of this is complemented by extra virgin olive oil and honey distilled from the mountain sun.

During its festivals, the town beats with vibrant energy: San Antonio Abad in January, when even the animals receive a blessing; the Candelarias in February, where fire cleanses the night; and the summer fair, when joy flows through the streets like fresh wine.

Furthermore, as if art itself sprang from the heart of the land, José Luis Puche moves us once again. His always honest stroke captures the breath of the spring. This time, he transforms the route of the Fountains into a shrine of memory and symbol. Its waterfalls blend with stone and water as if speaking in unison about the soul of a town that, though small, is immense in meaning.

The captain’s armband will carry that legacy and, with it, the strength of a place that reminds us the province is not just lived, it’s felt.

Málaga CF is province!
