Next season, Málaga CF will compete in the silver division along with another 16 teams with First Division experience; Zaragoza, Deportivo and Sporting to name but a few.
Experience in First
Of the 22 teams competing next season in LaLiga 123, 17 have been First Division sides. Real Zaragoza, with 58 seasons, and Deportivo de la Coruña, with 46, are the two teams with the most participation in the Spanish footballing elite. They are followed by Real Sporting with 42, Real Oviedo with 38, CA Osasuna with 37 and Málaga, taking into account both CD (20) and CF (17) also amounting to 37 seasons.
Capitals of the province
Another noteworthy statistic is that 16 of the 22 teams belong to provincial capitals. Out of them, five (Granada CF, Cádiz CF, UD Almería, Córdoba CF and Málaga CF) are Andalusian.
No reserve teams
The debutantes of this silver category are Madrid-based CF Rayo Majadahonda and Extremadura UD. Their predecessor, CF Extremadura played in the First Divison for two seasons (96-97 and 98-99). The ‘azulgrana’ team was the last to ascend, meaning the Second Division has had no reserve team since the 2002-03 season, when Málaga CF ‘B’ participated.
Iconic stadiums
Several of the stadiums where Málaga will compete next season are also historic. La Romareda, El Molinón, Martínez Valero and Municipal de Riazor, together with La Rosaleda were World Cup venues during Spain 1982. In addition, other grounds such as Son Moix (RCD Mallorca), El Sadar (CA Osasuna) and Heliodoro Rodríguez López (CD Tenerife) have hosted European competitions.
New experiences
The Blue and Whites will debut at the Estadio Santo Domingo of AD Alcorcón, Estadio del CF Reus Deportiu (yet to be determined) and Anxo Carro of CD Lugo. However, they do know the Miniestadio Cerro del Espino, where Rayo Majadahonda competes, although it was against Atlético de Madrid ‘B’ in the 98-99 season, and the Francisco de la Hera of Extremadura UD, but they played against their predecessor, CF Extremadura in the 2002-03 Cup.
