A Herrero: “We have to be self-critical in the dressing room and take a step forward”
The Malaguista captain held a press conference at the Reino de León following the defeat against Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa. “We have a team that is more than committed. We are going to turn the situation around,” he said.
Tough day
“It’s a difficult day. The match was what we saw. We tried to take the initiative. We tried, with little success, to reach the opponent’s goal. It leaves a bad taste, especially thinking about the people who came to watch us, the people who are trusting in us.”
Self-criticism in the dressing room
“We came up against a team that kept its lines very close together. It was very difficult for us to find our attacking players. It might give the impression that we weren’t sharp up front, but this is a team matter. There will be individuals who are singled out, but this is something for the dressing room. We have to be self-critical and take a step forward. I still believe this team has a lot to say. Many matches have slipped away due to small details. From that point, we have to take that step forward. I am very self-critical. I will try to do it, and I will ask the same of my teammates.”
Step forward
“We haven’t been able to turn possession into goals. We haven’t been sharp in the final third. It’s difficult in this category against a team that stays so compact. From there, the only word I have is self-criticism. We have to take a step forward. All of us, with more or less experience, have been in situations like this before. In the end, the ones on the pitch are the players, and we have to take this forward.”
Areas to improve
“Often it happens in phases. Last season, we also went through a period where we couldn’t quite find ourselves, and the team managed to turn it around. This year, what we’re missing is knowing how to overcome the blows we receive in matches and how to handle favourable results with confidence.”
A committed team that will turn things around
“Winning matches is in our hands, and I have complete confidence in my team. It’s a team that is more than committed, and we will take that step forward and turn the situation around.”
