70 years since Bazán’s scoring feat

On this day, 4th January 1948, Pedro Bazán scored nine goals against Hércules, one of the greatest individual feats in Spanish footballing history.

The season was 1947/48, matchday 14 of the Second Division. CD Málaga welcomed Hércules de Alicante to their ground. The match ended with a 9-2 win, thanks to the immeasurable figure of Pedro Bazán who scored the nine Malaguista goals, a record in Spanish football in a match of national category. That day the Malaguista striker lived up to his nickname, “El Cañonero de La Algaba”.

Bazán’s goals arrived in minutes 9, 13, 48, 51, 65, 69, 75, 78 and 83, with only one of them, the momentary 7-1, scored from the penalty spot. Emilio, Azcue and Roldán each provided two goal assists, with another from Teo. Apart from the penalty, there was another goal, the definitive 9-2, which stemmed from a personal play by Bazán. Seven of these nine goals were scored in the second half over 35 minutes. An incredible achievement for CD Málaga’s highest goal-scorer, which took place 70 years ago today.
