Málaga CF and German football

At 17.30 today, Málaga Club de Fútbol will face historic side, Hamburg SV in La Línea de la Concepción (Cádiz). The match will be broadcast live on the Club’s website and official apps.

European champions in the Bundesliga

Hamburg is the only team in the Bundesliga to have always competed in the top flight since the introduction of the current league in 1963. They have an enviable national record of six German league titles (the last three in the Bundesliga), three German Cups and two League Cups. On a continental level, they were European champions (82/83) and won the Cup Winners’ Cup (76/77), as well as two Intertoto Cups in 2005 and 2007.

Matches against German teams

The first time that Málaga CF played a friendly against a German rival was on 31st August 2000. That day, at La Rosaleda, Málaga drew 2-2 against Werder Bremen. Ismael and Ruano scored the Malaguista goals. The match was decided on penalties, ending in a Blue and Whites’ win by 4-3.

Since then, Málaga CF has competed against German rivals such as Borussia Dortmund (both in the Costa del Sol Cup and the UEFA Champions League), FC Augsburgo, Schalke 04, Alemannia Aachen, and more recently, Duisburg, Hertha Berlin and Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Players in common MCF-Hamburg

Málaga CF and Hamburg SV have had two players in common, who coincidentally both signed to Málaga in the same year, 2011. Joris Mathijsen (2006-2011) and Ruud Van Nistelrooy (2009-2011) played in Hamburg, sharing a dressing room for two seasons.

Interestingly, Sergio Zárate, the brother of ex-Malaguista, Ariel Zárate formed part of the Hamburg squad in the 1994/95 season.
