Van Gol and Mathijsen: Hamburg Connection

Málaga CF and Hamburg SV have had two players in common throughout their history. Dutch players, Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Joris Mathijsen made their way from Germany to Málaga together in the 2011/12 season.

In the summer of 2011, two Dutch players with a vast international career at club and national squad level arrived at Málaga CF. Interestingly, the two came from Hamburg where they coincided the previous two seasons.

On 2nd June, a legend of European and world football, considered one of the best goal-scorers of the XXI century, was presented at La Rosaleda in front of 10,000 fans: Ruud Van Nistelrooy. An absolute star, who played his final season as a professional with the Blue and Whites.

A month later, on the 4th July, centre-back Mathijsen was presented. Teammate of Van Gol with German outfit, Hamburg between 2009 and 2011, both also shared a dressing room with the Dutch national team.

Both were part of Málaga CF’s 2011/12 campaign, the Club’s best in the history of LaLiga, with a fourth place that secured access to the UEFA Champions League the following season.

Joris and Ruud are the connection between Hamburg and Málaga. Two players that link these two clubs, who this Thursday at 17:30 at La Línea will face each other for the first time in history.
