Sergio Sánchez: “Elche CF is a dangerous, hard-working team”

Málaga Club de Fútbol’s Sergio Sánchez held a press conference at the Ciudad de Málaga athletics stadium following this morning’s training session, to analyse the team ahead of Saturday’s match against Elche Club de Fútbol.

Sergio Sánchez has now recovered from injury, which has seen him out of action for the past four games: “I’m going to tread carefully and hope I’ll be ready to play this weekend.  I’m really keen to get back on the pitch as soon as possible, but I’ll definitely remain cautious.”

Claiming three points from Saturday’s match against Elche CF is crucial for the ‘Malaguista’ defender: “We need to make sure that we secure a home win by playing as well as we can, and at the same time put on a good show for our fans.  We’re all determined to end the season on a high, following what has been a tough year with a lot of changes.  Elche CF is a dangerous team, they have a strong, dynamic attack and move well around the pitch.  It’s important to seal our First Division permanency mathematically, and achieve a victory here in Málaga at the weekend.”

Sánchez looks back over the season both from a team and individual perspective: “It was an unsettling atmosphere and we knew how hard we’d have to work in order to remain in the First Division.  However, having shown improvement and following a team talk half way through the season, the group really came together.  It’s been a year of highs and lows, but that’s been the case with the League in general this season.  In our case, as we had a number of new signings, guaranteeing permanency is an extremely positive achievement.  On a personal level, it’s been a good season for me following two tough years.  I have been consistent and hope to keep moving forward from here on in.  It’s definitely been an important season for me.”

The Catalan-born defender talks about the team’s, as well as his own, future plans: “The future of the team is something that the directors will decide, it’s entirely out of our hands.  For the three years that I’ve been here, the atmosphere in the dressing room has always been great, and I hope it continues that way, as I would have liked it to last year.  With regards to my future, we’re currently in negotiations, but my main focus right now is securing our place in the First Division next season.  I’m really happy here.  Regarding new signings, nothing has really been said on the subject, as we’re all concentrating on a win on Saturday.  It’s nothing out of the ordinary that the Club is looking to strengthen the team next year.”

Finally, Sergio Sánchez talks about the possible arrival of the Club president: “No-one has said anything to us about it.  It’s important to have him close by I think.  It’s always positive for everyone when he visits the Club.”
