Santa Cruz: “The team’s level of intensity was very good tonight”

Roque Santa Cruz, who was in tonight’s starting-11, along with Flávio Ferreira, who made his BBVA League debut this evening, appeared before the media in the mixed zone after the game at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium.

Málaga Club de Fútbol’s Paraguayan-born striker is pleased with the team’s performance, but disappointed they couldn’t convert the scoring opportunities into goals: “We’re surprised by tonight’s defeat as we had several good chances to score throughout the game.  It’s really frustrating not to reap the rewards of all our hard work, but I think the team’s attitude and level of intensity on the pitch was very good tonight, and we’re all looking forward to the next game.”

Santa Cruz is disappointed the Blue and Whites aren’t taking a point home from the Ciutat de Valencia stadium: “It’s such a shame as we had so many promising goal chances.  We lacked definition, which is something we could be criticised for, but we’re leaving home with our heads held high as we were up against a team that just defended their 1-0 lead for the entire match.”

Flavio regrets that he made his BBVA League debut following the injury of his teammate: “It’s a shame that I got the chance to make my debut under these circumstances, but these things happen in football.  I work hard in training every day to ensure I’m match-fit for when the coach needs me.  I hope to get the chance to play a lot more in the future.”

With regards to tonight’s match, Flavio is proud of his team: “We worked hard, but luck wasn’t on our side tonight.  We deserved a draw at the very least, but it’s important that we stay focused and on the right track.”
