Roque and the Copa del Rey: a goal-scoring idyll

Paraguayan-born striker, Roque Santa Cruz speaks to MCFTV about his goal-scoring affair with the competition, which Málaga kicks off in Miranda de Ebro this 2015/16 season: the Copa del Rey.

Statements by Roque – MCFTV

(Cup / Goals) “It’s a competition in which the further you get the better you get.  It has come at a time for us where we need to give our all in order to give the team a boost.  We’re looking forward to playing Cup matches and scoring goals with the Club, which is always great for strikers.  I hope I get the chance to play so I can continue to gain the rhythm of play and feel good.”

(MCF’s highest goal-scorer in the Cup) “It’s an important statistic for players, and I hope I can exceed my current number of goals (5).  It’s an attractive tournament and every team wants to perform well, particularly those in the lower leagues.  We need to play the best we can, which will help us with later matches.”

To take into account:

  • Roque scored two goals in MCF’s Cup games against Deportivo at the Martiricos stadium (2014/15) and against Cacereño in Extremadura (2012/13), as well as a goal against Barça at La Rosaleda (2012/13).
  • Last season he only played one Cup match (73 minutes); the aforementioned game against Deportivo (18/12/2014), just before his departure to Mexican side, Cruz Azul.  Roque scored two goals (51’ and 68’) in Málaga’s victory (4-1).
  • He has won four German Cups with Bayern Munich (1999/00, 2002/03, 2004/05 and 2005/06), taking part in a total of 23 matches and scoring 14 goals over eight seasons in the German tournament.
  • Roque scored four goals in a German Cup game with Bayern in the 2004/05 season.  It was a 0-6 victory away to Völpke (21/08/2004), scoring in minutes 31’, 57’, 70’ and 89’. Munich won the Cup that year (2-1 in the final against Schalke 04).
