Reserve team wins in Torremolinos in league opener (1-0)

Victory for Atlético Malagueño against Juventud de Torremolinos on matchday 1 of Subgroup B in Third Division Group IX, thanks to a goal from Quintana in 52’.

The new Atlético Malagueño headed up by Funes and Bravo enjoyed a winning start to the 2020/21 season, claiming the first three points in the provincial derby against Juventud de Torremolinos, held at the Marbella Football Center.

As well as the coaching team, as many as six players debuted with the Blue and White reserve team, four in the starting line-up; Eu, Alberto García, Mario da Costa and Loren Zuñiga, whilst Víctor Olmo and Christian Delgado joined play in the second half. There was a good selection of former Malaguistas in the Torremolinos ranks, namely Javi Mérida, Gerrit, Iván Aguilar, Javi López and Pedro Mérida.

Atlético Malagueño sought rapid play on the wings from the outset, generating the first opportunity in minute 17 with a shot from Kevin from a Mario da Costa cross on the right that missed the target. The visitors deployed long shots to get closer to Gonzalo’s goal, whilst the best chance of the first half was at the feet of Quintana, whose shot from inside the area went wide after receiving a pass from Kevin.

In the second half, the Blue and White reserve team continued their attacking display. Just before the goal, promising play stemmed from the left, but Torremolinos defender Javi Mérida put paid to attempts by Kevin and Mario da Costa. In 52’, a lateral free kick from Rafa Camacho was headed by Quintana, however the rival keeper gained possession, but the ball fell back at the feet of the Malaguista who scored the 1-0. Murillo could have increased Atlético Malagueño’s lead with a close-range header, but the shot was deflected by goalkeeper César, who made several saves to prevent the locals extending their lead. In the final minutes Juventud de Torremolinos made further approaches to Gonzalo’s goal, but the Blue and Whites held on to secure the win.

Three points in the pot for Funes’ team, who next weekend will face Antequera CF at El Maulí on matchday 2 of Subgroup B in Third Division Group IX.
