Pellicer: “We had to win and we did it”

The Málaga CF coach held a press conference after the victory against Recreativo Granada at Los Cármenes. “We have to continue working from humility and convince our fans,” he said.

Thank you, Granada CF

“We must thank Granada CF and their fans. What happened today goes beyond football. It was two sets of fans coming together. It was a true fiesta. We gave Spanish football an example of two fanbases, each one in a different situation. We had to compete, and we had to win. Thank you to our fans, who support us unconditionally in very difficult situations.”

Match review

“In the first half, every team has a lot of energy. They pressured us with a 4-2-4 formation, and we had many losses. They took advantage and created situations, not of danger, but of playing in our half. As the game progressed, we found the means to overcome the pressure. With the goal, the game was already more under control. We had to win and we did it. We have to continue working hard and improving. It was a game in which we had a lot to lose because of how we arrived here.”

Always working to improve

“We had to win and be convincing. It hasn't convinced me 100%, but there are things we did well. We have to continue improving because these people (the fans) deserve much better. Beyond conviction, it was important to keep a clean sheet. We came from a situation in which we were not being solid in defence. We have to continue working from humility and convince our fans.”

Structure with three central defenders

“I don't believe in game systems. They vary depending on the players and their characteristics. We didn’t look at the rival, we focused on ourselves. We thought it was the best structure. We wanted to be dominant and pressure the opponent. We need greater consistency.”
