Even match
“It was a very close match. We were up against the best team in the category who scored on the second play after a set piece. We had a good first half, we pushed upfront, recovered the ball but we lacked a little patience. Few teams have given them these last pass situations. Following the goal, the match became more comfortable for them. However, the team continued to insist. It was difficult for us and the lads gave their all, their soul. I have congratulated them. There are 18 games left, one thing is dreaming, and another is reality. We have to take each match at a time and only focus on ourselves and improve. In the two playoff games against them, they were better due to minor details. We have to polish them and be more consistent like they are, and also Ibiza.”
Small details for the future
“This was a lesson, against a very physical team, and we matched them. Against this team profile, the last pass with advanced defence, like us, is resolved by the small details. We have to improve defensive consistency as the goal stemmed from a set piece. Thanks to the fans for their support, the boys really gave their all. We have insisted in every possible way. We changed structures, but not the idea. I knew it wasn't going to be a 0-0 game, we weren't successful in the last pass. We’ll have to focus on the small details in future.”
Maximum effort
“We gave everything against the best team in the category, the difference is the goals. We showed dedication, effort, courage and intensity. We have a lot of room for improvement, we are Málaga. This is a continuous learning curve, knowing where we are. If we think we are going to be first, we have to be realistic. We have to work to be the best team in the first round, we want the best. The one who wants to move up from here the most is me. We’re just concentrating on improving. The boys are giving everything.”
Good approach
“We had a game plan, the operational strategy was very good. The rival, who are the best attacking team, play with five centre backs. I've had that defensive formation for a long time. In the first half we were closer than them, they were very uncomfortable. We had variants, but we went with the same idea. Moussa overcame defensive lines, with Dani and Manu we went with individual duels. For me this has been the best-prepared week.”
New objective: Granada
“I’m very angry for the people and for everything. We are Málaga, there is a points difference. The reality is that we have to think about the Granada game. We have to work hard and not get distracted, just concentrate on ourselves. Preparations will get underway on Tuesday for this very important match.”
Ambition and reality
“We have to be ambitious in everything. There is a difference of points in the standings, but we have to look at ourselves. We have to pick ourselves up and improve, this is a typical playoff game. When there are mistakes it helps you improve and keep learning. We have to assume all situations. I see the lads, they are all participating, they recognise that they are important. There’s a long road ahead.”
