The coach spoke to the media at La Rosaleda ahead of Eibar-Málaga: “We have another opportunity, and it depends on us more than on the results that may happen,” he stated.
Eibar, tomorrow’s rival
“The most important thing is to look at ourselves. Focused on the Eibar match. Since the arrival of the new coach, they have earned five draws and three wins. They have changed their philosophy and identity in terms of technical-tactical aspects, with a lot of variety, and are trying to change the preconceived idea we have of Eibar. It’s a match in a stadium that is pure football, beautiful. It has been tough for us, we come from that last-minute situation (in Huesca), but we need to regroup with conviction and look for the victory. I see the players in good form, they suffer, but we need to grow, and the time for change is through winning matches.”
Final stretch
“When we went to Cartagena, it was almost like a final, and it was in February. At this club, we are always playing finals. There are seven left, we have an opportunity, and it depends on us more than on the results that may happen. We need to look at ourselves. There’s less time left, luck needs to be worked for, and we need to be self-critical. We must get the most out of ourselves and use all the resources available to succeed. The state of mind is very important in any adverse situation that may arise. And to do the work we do day by day in training. We’ve shown that we are capable of overcoming any situation and being effective. I’m focused on helping the players.”
Mentality
“We know the level of demand at this club. We need to have that mental strength and block out the outside noise. We have to do it by avoiding the 'I' and anything individual, because what matters is the team. More determination, avoiding small mistakes, and going after that bit of luck.”
Possible changes
“There have been situations with form, injuries... I can't even remember the last time I repeated a starting line-up, but it's also due to player profiles. I don't think we need a revolution. We're the second team that runs the most, not that it's all about running, but we’re right up there, and it’s a time to stay calm and choose the players who, within the game plan, show that sharp mindset in the face of any adversity. That, to me, is very important.”
Calm week
“This week has been the calmest, professionally speaking. We've been on our own, working with the desire to improve. We're all suffering. I'm prepared for everything. I'm privileged, I have the best job, I'm at the best club in the world, and when I'm no longer here, my recognition goes to the club, the fans, the players... From there, what matters are the results. And getting the most out of the team.”
