Match in Santander
“We need to know and understand where we’re going wrong. We must seek unity, all pulling in the same direction, and the self-respect we’ve all shown. In last year’s two matches against Racing, we performed at a very high level. We’re facing a game where you can’t afford to blink, against a wounded team, in their stadium, who have lost to two newly promoted sides. A team with that anger, and we have that anger doubled. We need to look deep within ourselves so that, focused and united, we can reconnect with who we are. It will be a high-scoring match where we must be decisive and manage our emotions. We need to return to our technical-tactical fundamentals, and on a physical and emotional level, remain focused and humble.”
Small details
“They haven’t been three brilliant matches, the previous ones. Those small details have cost us. The coach is ultimately responsible, and must maintain that level of demand and get the best performance from the players. When there’s a hurricane blowing, the best way to respond is to win, and to convey calm.”
Calm and unity
“As coaches, we have to think quickly about what’s coming so we can win the next match. We need to take that step forward with calm, unity, and utmost respect, because we’re managing a lot of emotions. With empathy, but without complaints or excuses.”
Specific work
“Today we worked on very specific things, in groups, focusing on the small details. They don’t push their line as high as last year, and we can’t play so many long balls either. I see the players focused, there are no excuses.”
