Match analysis
“I think we started very well. We already knew, because I watched Las Palmas live the other day in Córdoba, that they’re a team that puts you under pressure, and in their first two games they had always gone ahead on the scoreboard. That changes the context a lot, but today it was the other way around. They had a clear chance with a ball off the crossbar, but we started well, forcing turnovers and knowing how to press.”
“Then our goal came, and in the second half I think we lacked possession and more composure in our transitions. We were too hurried, always looking for the first ball in behind, when perhaps the right thing was to take two or three more touches to find Larrubia and the others in better positions.”
Happy with the team’s commitment
“I’m very happy with the team’s performance. We achieved a very valuable victory on a very difficult pitch. There were phases where we played as we wanted and others not so much. But we also have to give credit to the opponent: the other day they played a spectacular game and have the ability to draw you in and create danger.”
“What I take away from this is the collective commitment. This year we want to take a step forward: be bolder, press higher up the pitch, and link up more effectively.”
Pleased with first away win
“We also have to take the opponent into account. UD Las Palmas came down from the top division, and every match for them is like a final because rivals play against them with an extra edge. That’s why I value this victory so much. Also, we brought the energy we feel at La Rosaleda here as well, with our fans, despite the push from the home supporters. Last year we only won two away games, and this first trip was a real challenge. I’m very happy, but staying grounded, because any small detail could have changed the score.”
Team management
“All the players want to play, which is normal, but the important thing is that they understand we are stronger together. Today the hero was Rafa, but for me, the heroes are all of them. In clubs like Málaga or Las Palmas, with so many fans and so much emotion, a win or a loss can change the mood. I want balance, consistency, and demanding standards. And sometimes being demanding is uncomfortable, but it’s necessary. We’ve only played three matches, what will matter is how we all progress: players, team, and squad as a whole.”
Great start to the season for Rafa
“Rafa is a young guy. Today he made his debut in a top-flight stadium, and he did it with energy. We have to take advantage of these moments with players. Beyond the goal, what I liked was the strength and determination he showed. But he still has a lot to improve. In the 60th minute, I had to substitute him because the demands here are maximum: performing for 60 or 70 minutes is not enough, you have to do it for the full 90. And that is only achieved through daily work. That’s the idea: work, work, and work, so that not just Rafa, but everyone, can give their maximum level for the full 90 minutes.”
