Press conference

Pellicer: “I’m happy with our work, we can compete against anyone”

The Málaga CF coach held a press conference after the draw against UD Ibiza at Can Misses. “We played a good game against a great rival, but we have to improve what we did today to win at home,” he said.

Possibilities of victory

“It's more than a point. I have the feeling that, at times, we could have taken the three points, in a transition we could have scored the second goal. Except for some set pieces and certain situations, I think we had control of the game, yet without generating many chances either.”

The toughest part

“The start of the second half was hesitant. It was when the locals were at their best. We weren’t accurate in adjusting the pressure. We lacked a little experience and needed to have controlled the game a little more. We weren’t overcoming the pressure as I think we were doing in the first half.”

Change in gameplay

“We tried to play today with three on the inside and for both Dioni and Roberto to lose their position, one upfront and the other on the wing, to reach what we believed could be difficult for the two midfielders. We found David and Dani, but we are missing that last play. They are young and we will continue working hard.”

Haitam’s second goal

“With Haitam we have to go little by little. He still can’t play 90 minutes and we have to control the physical load to avoid a possible relapse. Haitam is back and I don't think there is a better signing. Which we saw today.”

Murillo in the starting line-up

“Murillo has always been a central defender. Due to the circumstances of the pre-season, he played as left back, but he is a player profile that can work in all positions. It was an important match, against a top-level team with players who are among the best in the category in terms of attack. Watching him train is a pleasure and gives you security. That's why, when you put him on the wing, you know what he's going to give you. He is a very consistent and much-needed player in the squad.”

Things to improve

“We are having problems in the last zone, in that last pass and in that pause. There we have to take a step forward. Today we did many things well, but we get to those areas and nothing happens or there’s bad crosses or poor decision making. When we overcame their pressure we should have taken action sooner. Touch and move. There were many situations with Juan, Dioni and Roberto that, if the decision to pass had been made, they would have had a scoring opportunity.”

Always compete

“I'm leaving happy with the boys' work. This was a squad list with 12 homegrown players. We can compete against anyone. We know that we are Málaga and that we have to win, but that “we are Málaga” has to be in quotes because today we arrived in a difficult situation.”

Positive aspects of the match

“The team showed personality. We have tried to progress from the beginning of the game, tried to overcome lines of pressure. We have had a lot of defensive commitment. Today we pressed differently, we pressed with three. Ibiza at home, except for the match against Intercity, is a team that creates many chances and today was no different, but it was a very close match.”

Focus on Alcoyano

“We played a good game against a great rival, but we have to improve what we did today to win at home. It's another type of match. At home and against Alcoyano. We have to take more risks and be mentally prepared.”

Concentrating on the way forward

“The three of us are doing very difficult things in this division. It’s our 11th match undefeated and that is very difficult. And yet, we are third. Ibiza and Castellón are having a great season. Under normal conditions, in any other group, they would go first. The point is not good if Castellón lose tomorrow or worse if they win. We have to focus, continue improving and make our way forward. This is a long road and you don't win with the name and the budget. We have the obligation to win at all grounds.”
