The Malaguista coach held a press conference following the draw with Atlético Sanluqueño at La Rosaleda. “The finish takes time. The other day we scored four goals,” he said.
Lack of precision
“Forget about the last three games. One thing was missing today: a goal. From there, it doesn't matter who the rival is. If we had scored from some of the opportunities we had in the first half or indeed the second, this changes. The other day we scored two from set pieces and had fewer chances. In football, the goal is the key. If we’d been accurate, with so many chances we had, there is absolutely nothing we can say to the lads. We must be aware that we have to continue improving in the finishing zone, but everything else, except for certain moments of the game, we only lacked precision and goals. The boys showed courage and hunger, they have given everything. We have to raise the level.”
Everything to win
“We weren’t lacking in football, it was about a lack of precision in terms of a goal. We saw football. If we don't create chances, we lack football. By generating fewer situations, many times there are goals. We had to carry the weight of the game, we lacked precision in the last pass. It wasn’t our football, it was the lack of goal. There was a lack of precision in the finishing zone. The team did everything to win. We have to score goals from the chances we have. If we don’t improve this precision, it will cost us much more. In the end the anxiety got the better of us, but it’s difficult to understand that with that anxiety we are Málaga and we need to win. We have to continue fighting and improving on the finish and in decision making.”
Focused on improving
“If we do an analysis of all of the above, I would be concerned. Now, after seeing what I've seen today, I'm focused on improving that decision making. The finish takes time. The other day we scored four goals, two came from set pieces and two from transitions. In positional attack against a team that retreated in a low block, it was tough for us. We played a very good game, but it feels like a bad game as there was no goal. When there is an error, we were slow to react. Away from home we made up for it very quickly. And that is where we have to improve.”
Gameplan
“It was a different type of plan because the rival was another rival. We were clear about how to pressure, how to differentiate in attack... The gameplan for me turned out perfectly, except for the goal.”
The rival
“Since the arrival of the new coach they have tried to propose their gameplan, play from behind to try to generate superiority. Against Recre they created more situations. I think we did well in terms of pressure. They are a daring team, with a very clear idea, and that is important being in such a difficult situation. They’ll likely be fighting to get out of that position.”
