Pellicer: “Keep insisting; hard work pays off, and unity is the key”

The Málaga CF coach spoke after the defeat against Elche CF (0-3). “The team didn't back down during the match. We weren't that good before, nor are we that bad now,” he commented.

Complicated start

“The start is key. Elche's goals came from direct play and crosses, as well as from a throw-in, and the third was our mistake. Small details that cost us. Today, Elche played long balls more than ever; these things happen, and it's true that we created chances, but we lacked finishing. I feel proud of the boys. It's true they beat us in individual duels, but the team didn’t lose sight of the game. Congratulations to the opponent, this is football, and it’s a learning experience.”

Analyse and improve

“I don't leave with the worst feelings. Of course, 0-3, and with them at 0-2, they felt very comfortable, and we couldn’t get back into the game. You’re left with that feeling... It’s the seventh matchday, and you can have a bad day. I need to watch the game, those moments of stress, pushing forward, leaving spaces, especially against a very high-quality rival. This was the match where Elche had the least possession. I leave with a bad feeling because of the result, but not because of the boys' effort. Now comes a marathon of games, and we weren’t that good before, nor are we that bad now. But today, despite the result, we didn’t lose sight of the game.”

Learn and continue

“Lack of intensity? I wouldn’t say that. We lacked adjustments, being quicker and more active in situations involving crosses, but not intensity. When they scored, we had some moments, like Manu's chance, but we did lack sharpness in duels, where they are very strong. We need to keep confidence despite the situations that happen. It's a learning experience. The boys want it, they knew it was going to be tough, and today they were very efficient. With the first action and the second goal, things became difficult for us.”

A tough category

“The main actors are the players, and they want to do their best. We are all heroes and villains. This is a football team; the boys are training well, and we have to understand that we're in a tough league, and things like this can happen.”

Amazing fans

“What they showed us today, and last season as well, reminds us where we come from... Something incredible was created. I can’t even remember the last time we lost at home. They’ve always been there, and now more than ever. Hats off to them, and just for them, we’re going to rise again. These things happen in football, and we have to accept it and stay on the path we’re on.”

Together in the good and bad times

“More difficult times are going to come. Both the fans and us have a high level of resilience, and it's in critical moments that we are strongest. To regain confidence, it's important to remember where you come from and ask why things happen. Now, it's about getting back to work with a clear week ahead of us, playing on Sunday, and then comes a marathon of games. We’re going to need everyone.”

Focused on ABANCA-Riazor

“It's good to be unbeaten until the seventh matchday. We didn't expect this result, but we have to keep focusing on the things we've done well so far. Always stay alert. Now we’re going up against Deportivo, who are coming off a huge win, and things can change from one week to the next. We have to keep insisting; hard work pays off, and unity is the key.”
