Muñiz: “It was a Second Division team coming here, not a group of friends”

The Málaga CF coach commented in the press conference that the first goal did a lot of damage: “They went ahead on the scoreboard and it became a real struggle for us; we had to separate the lines and there they took advantage of their game”.

The match

“We came across a team that, as we already knew, wasn’t a youth team. They are a serious group of players, professionals, with good gameplay. We knew they’d be a tough team. They went ahead on the scoreboard and it became a real struggle for us; we had to take more risks, separate the lines… and there they took advantage of their game”.

Reus, a serious team

“Equality in this category is to the maximum. Whoever takes the lead will have an easier ride, and as I said, it was a Second Division team coming here, not a group of friends. Two weeks ago, they defeated Alcorcón and the other day, against Osasuna, they lost due to an isolated incident. A good team was coming here, and they showed it. They played the game they had to play, and in the end, we had to show a degree of desperation. We mentioned in the preview, if we thought we’d have an easy win we’d be wrong. They played well on the counter-attack, had three opportunities, scored three goals and then the match came to an end”.

The league

“To be a candidate you need to get to March or April in a position to fight for the objective. There’s no room for mistakes, this has been a stumbling block, but the team today was disputing the leadership. We don’t need to fall into a state of panic or misleading situations. We know we’re competing in a difficult category, but we also know this was only a small setback. They beat us, they did it well, and from here on in we’ll continue to work hard. The league doesn’t end today, and even if it did, we’d be in the play-offs. The team has been in the play-offs for 20 matches. We have to take each day at a time”.

Defensive level

“Up until today we have conceded 13 goals. The team works well in defence. Today we trailed behind after 11 minutes and we started to rush things, we took more risks, had to leave more spaces and they played and played well. Then they made three approaches and scored. We had our chances but didn’t manage to convert. Today wasn’t our day. They are three points, nothing more. We must keep our heads held high, we lost a game and missed out on three points. Nothing more”.

Effort

“The team cannot be criticised for a lack of effort and hard work. Up until the 90th minute, at 0-3 down, there were players running and piling the pressure on. The team never gave up at any time and defended the shirt for 90 minutes. The match went into phases in which the rival scored from a corner, from there they made it tough to generate goal chances, then we had them but didn’t score, and from then the match was played in the opposing half, knowing what can happen on the counter. We had more speed in the second half, pressured the rival better, stole possession away from our goal, it wasn’t because of a lack of ambition”.
