Mel: “We can’t give up”

The Malaguista manager held a press conference following #MálagaBurgosCF: “We’re four points away from getting out of the relegation zone, that’s nothing when there’s so many games remaining,” he said.

Pepe Mel spoke to the media after the match against Burgos CF: “We played a good 60 minutes and then our nerves and haste got the better of us. We did the most difficult thing, which was to take the lead, that was the game plan. Then Burgos scored on a counterattack. We need to have more skill, being 1-0 in front at home, we shouldn't have conceded that goal. From then on, anxiety and nerves set in,” said the coach.

The draw doesn’t meet the Blue and Whites’ expectations, but the distance from safety is perfectly attainable: “We’re four points away from getting out of the relegation zone, that’s nothing when there’s so many games remaining. Point by point is a real struggle for us. These mistakes kill us. Burgos went level when it should have been the other way around. We should have got them on the counter numerous times,” he said with self-criticism.

The coach is confident that victories will soon arrive: “I trust in my work and the players, seeing how they work. Point by point we’re not going to save ourselves. I hope to end this streak quickly. The players aren’t lazy, they never give up, if they did that would be concerning and an indication we’d be dead. The players try and fight back, but it doesn't work out for us,” said the manager.

The team works hard to score points, yet to date, the results aren’t going our way. However, there’s no negativity in the dressing room under any circumstances: “We tried in every possible way and at the moment it’s not working out for us. Tomorrow, I’ll go back to work with the players and prepare for the game with Sporting. Málaga are four points away from salvation, I understand that there’s a downbeat mood, but we can’t give up, it’s not an option,” he said.
