Match preview: SportingMálaga

Málaga CF is heading to Asturias to face Real Sporting de Gijón on LaLiga SmartBank matchday 40.

The Blue and Whites, in 14th position in the standings with 49 points, are up against Sporting with 51 points and in 12th place. The match will be held at El Molinón-Enrique Castro ‘Quini’ this Monday 13th July at 19:30 (Movistar LaLiga).

The match will be officiated by Isidro Díaz de Mera Escuderos, who has refereed Málaga CF on five occasions: four in the Second Division and once in the promotion play-offs, resulting in three draws and two defeats for the Malaguistas. David Pérez Pallas is in charge of the VAR.

  • The fifth time Málaga CF will face Sporting de Gijón, at El Molinón-Enrique Castro ‘Quini’, in a Second Division match. Previous games resulted in two victories (1-3 and 0-1 in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons) and two draws (1-1 and 2-2 in the 1998-99 and 2018-19 campaigns).
  • Counting the official matches in the First Division, the Malaguista results away to Sporting total four wins, three draws and three defeats, with 14 goals scored and 12 conceded.
  • On 14th May 1989, CD Málaga faced Sporting de Gijón, on First Division matchday 32. Homegrown player Luis Merino made his debut with CD Málaga that day and it couldn’t have gone better. He scored the two goals that led to the 1-2 win for the Malaguista squad.
